Obituary: Zella Frances (McCartney) Voigt
The funeral service for Zella Frances Voigt of Albert Lea, Minnesota will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Christ Episcopal Church in Albert Lea. Reverend Jim Young will officiate. Interment will be Graceland Cemetery. Bonnerup Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
Zella died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Thornecrest Health Care Center, Albert Lea.
Zella was born on January 24, 1906, in Forbes, North Dakota, the daughter of Fred D. and Frances (Buley McPike) McCartney. In 1914, her family moved to Oakes, North Dakota. She graduated with honors from Oakes High School. In 1924, she attended Hamline University where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Theta Society. She later graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. Degree in Education. She taught English, History, and Speech at the high school level in North Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota. On June 8, 1934, she married William Russell Voigt in Oakes, North Dakota and they made their home in Albert Lea. Zella was also in sales with Skinner Chamberlin Department Store for 25 years. Her husband W. Russell Voigt had been a writer for the Albert Lea Tribune for over 40 years.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she had been very active and was Past Directress of the Altar Guild. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 75 years, and had served as Worthy Matron of Halcyon Chapter #21. Zella had also been a member of A.A.U.W. for over 50 years, and a member of Freeborn County Historical Society. She enjoyed reading, knitting, playing bridge, travel, AAUW Book Club and family activities .
Zella is survived by three children: Joanne and her husband Fred Hagen of Minnetonka, MN, Susan and her husband Jim Jenson of Omaha, NE, William Voigt and his wife Lucille from Torrance, CA, 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.
Zella was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, on February 18, 1986,
2 brothers: Clayton and Marshall McCartney, sister-in-law Edythe McCartney.
