Wilma Johnston

Wilma Johnston, age 106, died peacefully September 2nd, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, MN. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 7, at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Dwight Netzer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Mrs. Johnston was born July 6, 1912 in Ray County, MO, the daughter of J. Irvin and Mable Wall Maddux. Wilma was a graduate of Richmond Missouri High School, attended Kansas City Teachers College and was a graduate of the Sherashon-Hooley Business College in Kansas City, MO. After graduation from college she returned to Ray County to teach in a one-room school house for two years where she started her own “hot lunch” program. After lighting a fire in the old pot belly stove, she would start a pot of vegetable soup which she placed on the back of the stove for herself and her students. During the summer she organized new chapters of Beta Sigma Phi sorority in several northern Missouri Towns. In 1934 when Federal Soil Conservation program was established she left her teaching position to move to Bethany, MO to become a secretary in the Midwestern Regional Office. She was later transferred to an office in Columbia, MO., and in 1938, she joined the staff of the Callaway County Soil Conservation service office in Fulton, MO. She was also assistant to the registrar at William Woods College in later years. She married Virgil A. Johnston, Jr. of Fulton, MO on February 23, 1939, and there were married for 70 years Wilma and Virgil relocated from Fulton, MO to Albert Lea in 2003 to be closer to family. Virgil preceded her in death on December 3, 2009. Wilma is survived by a daughter, Judith (Robert) Reintsema of Sun City, FL, and a son Joe (Julie) Johnston of Albert Lea, MN and 7 grandchildren including Alex (Angie) Johnston of Albert Lea, Blair (Emily) Johnston of St. Paul, Debbie Armstrong of Richmond, VA, Cindy McNeil, of Gallatin Gateway, MT, Sheryl Shaver of Terre Haute, IN, and Mary Johnston of Longwood, FL; 12 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. One son, George D. Johnston and one granddaughter Cathy Perri, and a great granddaughter Faith Johnston preceded her in death. Wilma was a 50 year member of the PEO Chapter DY and the Fulton Study Club and served as president of both organizations. She also served as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leader, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir of Fulton Christian Church. She was a avid bridge player and a flower gardener. Wilma celebrated her 106th birthday this July with her family and friends and enjoyed the day very much. Her ashes will be interred with her husband’s in Fulton, MO. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. John’s Meadows and 3rd floor Woodlands, and Mayo Hospice as well as longtime valued caregiver Alma Talamantes, special friends Coni Tuberty and Elise Nyenhuis. Memorials are preferred to the First Presbyterian Church or Mayo Hospice.
