The Funeral service for Sidney G. Johnson, of Albert Lea, MN formerly of Rake, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, May 23, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa. Pastor Terry Mahnke will officiate. Interment will be in East Cemetery, rural Rake. Military Honors will be accorded by Rake area Veteran's Organizations. Friends may visit with family one hour before the service at the church.
Sidney died on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Albert Lea Medical Center. He was 93. He was born on a farm near Rake, Iowa, on February 24, 1918, to Gustave and Susan
(Ryg) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa where he was a lifetime member. He graduated from Rake High School. Sidney served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII, from 1943 – 1945, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and a European African
Middle East Ribbon with 4 bronze service stars.
He had been a member of the Rake area American
Legion for more than 67 years. Sidney and his brother Herman lived outside of Rake where they farmed and enjoyed raising cattle. Also, Sidney along with his brother Odin, ran Johnson Meat Market in Rake. He was an avid bowler, liked all sports, especially baseball, and he enjoyed driving around the countryside with Herman at his side checking out the crops. He is survived by a brother Alanzo "Lonnie" (Betty) Johnson of Albert Lea, a sister Alta Erdahl of Albert Lea; nieces and nephews: Larry (Lois) Johnson of Albert Lea, Paul Johnson of Savage, MN, Steve (Becky) Johnson of Albert Lea, Randy (Karen)Erdahl of Chaska, MN, Kevin (Jean) Erdahl of Minneapolis, MN, Susan (Doug) Davis of Lake City, MN, Brian (Karen) Erdahl of Gibsonia, PA, Allan (Margarete) Erdahl of Irvine, CA, Shari Erdahl (Chris Mazurek) of Eden Prairie, MN, LouAnn (Peter) Van Gerpen of Garner, Iowa and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Odin, Irvin, Russell, and Herman, sisters-in-law Lillian Johnson and Jackie Peth, brother-in-law Sidney Erdahl, nephews Craig Erdahl and Ronald Russ, and niece Patricia Eastvold.
