Shirley Rae (Stanley) Hovland died December 12, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Home where she resided for three and a half years. She was 88 years old. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 11 am Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea. Chaplain Don Malinsky will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Shirley Rae Stanley, daughter of J.R. and Ethel M. (Arthur) Stanley was born April 14, 1928 in Hollandale (Maple Island), Minnesota. She spent her childhood in Iowa and moved back to the Hollandale area her senior year of high school. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1946. After graduation she rented a room in town from Mrs. Clark and worked at Woolworths.
On September 3, 1950 Shirley was united in marriage to Melvin S. Hovland in Albert Lea, Minnesota. They made their home in Maple Island and had 4 children together.
Shirley was a homemaker and occasionally worked for local farmer friends in cabbage and potato harvests. She lived next door to her parents and cared for them as they aged. She was a member of the Happy Hour Club and served as president for many years. She attended the Conservative Congregational Church of Hollandale.
Shirley is survived by her children, Gary Hovland of Albert Lea, MN, Patti (Jim) Howe of Prior Lake, MN, Douglas (Brenda) Hovland of Lisbon, CT, Sheila (Kevin) Hansen of Clarks Grove, MN; grandchildren, Zachary (Trisha) Hansen, Daniel (Bree) Hansen, Shelby (Ben) Westphal, Kara Hovland, Connor Hovland; great-grandchildren, Aryah, Jaxon, LettieMarie, Liam, and Stella; sister-in-law, Shirley Stanley of Apple Valley, MN; brother-in-law, Melvin Geurts of Lynnville, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin in 2015; granddaughter, Selina Hovland; 5 brothers: Jack, Lilburn, Robert, Gordon, and Donald Stanley; 2 sisters: Iris Geurts and Karen VerSteegt.
