Roger Allen Dettmann, a beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend, left us on December 15th, 2024, at the age of 62, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Born in Marshall, MN, on April 4th, 1962, Roger was baptized that same year at the English Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, MN. He grew up in a small town, attending Minnesota Public School as a child and later finishing high school at Ellendale Public School, where he made lifelong friends. On a beautiful day in September 1982, Roger married Lisa Larson, and together they welcomed two wonderful sons, Joshua and Andrew.
Roger had a curious spirit and dabbled in many careers. He worked on a horse ranch, at Home Depot, and even as a cook, all while navigating life's ups and downs. After his marriage to Lisa ended, he embarked on an extraordinary adventure, spending time in Antarctica from 1989 to 1990. As a utility engineer for ITT Antarctic Services Inc., he contributed to important research on the Ross Ice Shelf while stationed at McMurdo Station. His hard work didn't go unnoticed; he received two awards for his contributions during this unique chapter of his life.
It was in this time of transition that Roger met Cheryl Erickson, who brought new joy into his life. He embraced the role of an instant father to her four children: Sean, Sherri, Julie, and Kara. Their home, just outside of Wendell, MN, became a gathering place filled with laughter and love. Roger started his own business, Dettmann Mechanical Services Inc., where he used his skills to repair heating and air conditioning units, helping families stay comfortable in their homes. Though he and Cheryl eventually went their separate ways, they remained close friends, exemplifying the importance of family and connection.
Roger's passions were as diverse as his jobs. He loved the thrill of hunting, the camaraderie of bowling, and the excitement of car shows. Music was a big part of his life-he enjoyed playing his guitar and rocking out to his favorite heavy rock tunes. Above all, he treasured his roles as a dad and grandfather, always making time for his 14 grandchildren. His sense of humor was a gift that drew people in; there was never a dull moment with Roger around. Whether he was telling stories or sharing a laugh, he had a knack for making every gathering special.
Roger is survived by his sons, Joshua and Andrew Dettmann, along with Cheryl's children, Sean, Sherri, Julie, and Kara. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, two sisters, Roberta Vesely and Rebecca Quaintance, and three brothers, Robert Dettmann, Ron Dettmann, and Randy Dettmann, who will cherish his memory forever.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, George and Faye Dettmann; his brother, Dennis Saari; half-sister, Marie Dettmann; and his cherished grandparents, George and Louise Dettmann and Frederick and Elnora Richard.
