Memorial services for Ray G. McMullin of Albert Lea, MN, will be held a t 11:00 AM Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Pastor John Holt will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 11:00 at the church on Thursday. Private interment will be held at a later date. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Area Veterans Groups.
Ray was born in Readstown, WI, on June 12, 1926 to Ray Gilbert and Florence (Groves) McMullin. He was raised in Palatine, IL, and graduated from Palatine High School in 1944. He served his country in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre on an aviation supply ship and the USS Telefore AIA-210.
He moved to Albert Lea with his mother in 1946 where he owned the City Delivery Service and was part owner in a Cities Service Gas Station. After completing Meat Cutting School, he worked at National Tea and later ran the meat market in Bowen Grocery in Northwood, Iowa from 1947 to 1954.
Ray was united in marriage to Beverly Toenges on November 27, 1947 at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, MN. They were blessed with two sons, Michael and Randy McMullin.
In 1954 Ray moved his family to Waterloo, Iowa where he became a Federal Meat Inspector from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. He later became a partner in Rada Cutlery Sales, a mail order business until 1991.
While in Waterloo he was an active member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, He served in the Big Brother program and was a By Scout Leader of Troop 29. He had 10 of his scouts attain the rank of "Eagle Scout" including his two sons. Ray loved his cabin on Namakan Lake and for 40 years he spent many weeks with family members and many friends.
In Albert Lea he was an active member of First Lutheran Church, the American Legion post #56 and the Elks Lodge #813. He was a volunteer at Good Samaritan and delivered "Meals on the Go". Ray spent much of his time helping elderly members of his and his wife Beverly's family.
Ray is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly; sons Michael Ray and his wife Audrey of Rochester, MN, Randy Ervin and his wife Jan of Fort Smith, AR, two grandsons Samuel of Mpls and Timothy of Grand Rapids, MN, his sister Helen of Colorado Springs, CO, brother in law Rolland Toenges of Edina, MN, sister in law Marilyn Toenges of Orlando, FL, and many dear nieces nephews and a host of loving friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jean Smith and husband Harlow, mother and father in law Gladys and Ervin Toenges, brothers in law Dale Toenges and William Stiles, sister in law Perneal Toenges and many special friends.
