Phyllis Nelson

Phyllis Melverna Nelson passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 23, 2014. She was at her home, in Albert Lea, surrounded by her family. She was 92 years of age. Phyllis was born to Edward and Ida (Johnson) Miller on September 21, 1921 in Ellendale, MN. She graduated from Ellendale High School and attended Mankato University. Following college Phyllis was employed at E.F. Johnson in Waseca, MN. She was later employed at Queen Stove in Albert Lea, where she met her future husband, Milburn Nelson. On June 24, 1946 Phyllis and Milburn were united in marriage in Ellendale MN.
Phyllis was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was involved in other women's groups. She was a stay at home mother when her children were young and later went to work at Federal Crop Insurance Agency. She also worked in the activities department and as an aide at Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.
Phyllis enjoyed homemakers club, card club, crossword puzzles, fishing , and garage sales (to search for treasures to add to her various collections). She was a 4-H leader for many years. She loved to travel, especially her annual trips Up North with her siblings and her numerous trips to Colorado. Crafting was a favorite pastime. She looked forward to her weekly craft days with her special friends Marsha and Marilyn. She loved her time spent with her grandchildren and they looked forward to her fresh baked cinnamon rolls. The time spent with her family and raising her children is what she cherished most in life.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Milburn, of Albert Lea, MN., children; DeeAnn (Tom) Nelson of Mankato, MN., Mary (Dave) Smith of Morrison, CO., Rick (Terry) Nelson of Forest Lake, MN., Jody Mitts of Fort Collins, CO., Kaye (Steve) Tufte of Albert Lea, MN. Grandchildren include; Annie Nelson, Molly (Mike) Thornburgh, D.J. (Jennifer) Smith, Rena (Walter) Chi, Aimee Nelson, Tony Nelson, Callie (Josh) Apodaca, Cody Mitts, Chelsea Mitts, Tristan, Louis, Logan and Tate Tufte. Other survivors include six great grandchildren, brother Edward (Arlene) Miller of Clarks Grove, MN., sister Ethel Reistad of Waterville, MN., brother in law LaVerne Seberson of Albert Lea, MN., sister in law Betty Miller of Kasson, MN., sister in law Erma Nelson of Albert Lea, MN., and many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dwight Miller, sister Eileen Seberson and several sisters in law and brothers in law.
Memorial Service for Phyllis will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Grace Lutheran church in Albert Lea. Pastor Todd Walsh will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday evening, March 28, 2014, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Bonnerup Funeral Service and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery at a later date.
