The funeral service for Maurice W. Nelson will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Bonnerup Funeral Chapel in Albert Lea, MN. The Reverend Mark Wendland and Vicar Cory will officiate. Burial will be in South Shellrock Cemetery, Northwood, IA. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the chapel. Military honors will be accorded by the Northwood Veterans.
Maurice died on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. He was 85 years old.
Maurice was born in Northwood, IA on March 3, 1920, the son of Carl and Olina (Mathieson) Nelson. He attended school in rural Northwood. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and also in the Korean Conflict, earning three Bronze Stars.
During his lifetime, Maurice had lived in Northwood, Iowa and Albert Lea , MN and for the last 10 years in Slayton, MN. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN. He had worked for various farmers in the Northwood area. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, dancing and playing the banjo. He was a very kind hearted person and was always willing to help people.
Maurice is survived by one sister-in-law, Selma Gerezewski of Northwood, IA, several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends in Slayton, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; six brothers.
