Mary Lucia Querna

March 11, 1955 — March 11, 2024

Waseca, MN

Mary Lucia Querna, beloved mother, sister, friend and musician, left this world on her 69th birthday surrounded by her loving family in Edina, MN. Born in Waseca, MN on March 11th, 1955, to Paul and Mary (Doyle) Querna, Mary was one of seven siblings, who shared many cherished memories of growing up on their family farm in New Richland, MN.

Mary plucked her first piano key at the age of 7, which laid the foundation for a love of music. She pursued that love to the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, studying Home Economics and sharing her talents through performances with the Sign Out music group.

Later, Mary wed and welcomed her beloved son, John in 1983. Mary's creativity and dedication led her to become a columnist for a newspaper in Lewiston, MN, where she could often be seen pulling, John in a red Radio Flyer on her way to interview a local resident.

After moving to Dakota, MN, in 1987, Mary had completed her family with the addition of her daughter, Rebecca. It was here that she was inspired to write books including Moments with Mom and Back to the Farm – a collection of stories from her growing on the family farm. Throughout her life, Mary remained deeply connected to her roots, including teaching piano to local children and even contributing to the art community in La Crosse, WI. Her talents extended beyond music, as she explored painting, photography, drawing, and Chalk Art.

Mary's greatest joys in life were her children, John and Rebecca, whom she raised with love and dedication. She loved to travel. Whether alone or with friends, some of her favorite trips were going out to California to see her son and a New York trip with her daughter
Mary was joined in heaven with her parents, Paul and Mary; and grandchild, Aiden Roddy.

Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her children, John (Jennifer) Yerhot, Rebecca (John) Roddy; grandchildren, Ethan Yerhot, Claire Yerhot, Catherine Roddy, Charles Roddy; siblings, Pam (Dave) Pokorney, Paul (Karen) Querna, Rick Querna, Pat (Ron) Drake, John (Wendy) Querna, and Mark Querna.

Mary's vast heart and enduring legacy will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the music she held so dear.

The family would like to extend deep gratitude toward the staff of caregivers at N.C. Little Hospice. Please allocate memorial contributions to the Coulee Region Humane Society in honor of Mary’s love of animals.

A small, private service will be held at a later date.
