Funeral Services for Margaret A. Bergland, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, at Grace Lutheran Church, 918 Garfield Ave, Albert Lea, MN. The Pastor Kent Otterman will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 Wednesday, at Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour before the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea. Margaret passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Austin, MN. She was 94. Margaret was born on October 4, 1922, to Leo and Grace (Qualey) Whelan in Mansfield, MN. She grew up on the farm, which was always near to her heart. She graduated from Albert Lea High School. Margaret married Helmer A. Bergland on October 24, 1942, at the parsonage in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Margaret and Helmer made Albert Lea their home, where she worked for the Desota Egg plant for more than 18 years.
She loved to play Bingo. She enjoyed filling her free time with embroidering and making dish towels and pillow cases. She was an avid gardener and loved all kinds of flowers.
She served as the neighborhood "Grandma", in addition to her grandchildren she loved and cared for several special neighborhood children. Margaret is survived by her son Neal Bergland (Clarice Dempewolf) of Glenville, and his children Kristie Lau of Albert Lea and Doug (Kristal) Paulson of Albert Lea, Daniel (Kim) Dempewolf of Denver, Co, Patty (Dave) Lawson of Myrtle, MN, Dawn Prestholt , Todd Dempewolf, Lisa Dempewolf, and Charles Dempewolf all of Albert Lea; her daughter Carolyn(Ronnie)Jenson of Emmons, MN; and their children Kellie (Dean) Anderson of Hayward, MN, and Breck Jenson, of Walters, MN; grandchildren Marciey (Scott) Hunter of Georgia and Tessie Kroupa (Tracy Funk) of Osage, IA: and many, many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; brother John (Mary Ann) Whelan of Milwaukee, WI; brother-in-law Arden Bergland, sisters-in-law Gladys Bergland and Pat Bergland and many additional nieces, nephews family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Grace Whelan; husband Helmer Bergland; son Jerry Bergland; grandsons Anthony Bergland, Troy Bergland and Bruce Dempewolf; sister Betty Grace Walkener; brothers, Leo Michael Whelan, Charles Robert Whelan, Thomas Edward Whelan and baby boy Whelan.
