James Francis Bergen, 74, of Albert Lea, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025, at Thornecrest Senior Living Community. Jim was a beloved figure in his community, known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to family and faith.
Born on June 4, 1950, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Jim was a son of the late Robert and Luella (Boyer) Bergen. A 1969 graduate of Washington High School in Cherokee, Iowa, Jim went on to study Culinary Arts at the former Albert Lea Technical College, a passion instilled in him by his beloved mother. He dedicated much of his life to serving others as a custodian at St. Theodore Catholic Church, where he was not only a longtime employee but also an active member of the congregation. As an usher and a key contributor to the church’s Christmas decorations each year, Jim’s spirit and dedication enriched the lives of many.
Jim cherished his time with family, especially Tuesdays spent with his sister, Pat Bergen. He was known for his culinary skills, creating beloved family dishes like scalloped potatoes and ham, goulash, pork chops, beef stew, and fruit salad. Jim was a dependable and trustworthy presence. In addition to his culinary pursuits, Jim had a passion for genealogy and family history, eagerly tracing the roots and stories that connected his loved ones. His enthusiasm for life extended to enjoying concerts and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
Jim is survived by three siblings, Chuck (Kim) Bergen, Peggy (Steve) Laraway, and Patricia Bergen; a sister-in-law, Maryanne Bergen; nieces and nephews, Tara (Brad) Adams, Ryan (Angela) Bergen, Tim ( Emily) Bergen, Kelly Bergen (Andrew Wolpers), Anne (Nate) McMurray, Stephanie (Tom) Steidl, Michael Laraway, Amy (Robert) Reisdorf, and Robert (Anna) Bergen; 14 great-nieces and nephews; and several extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Robert and Luella Bergen, Jim was preceded in death by three siblings, Robert M. Bergen, Catherine A. Bergen, and Mark J. Bergen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, March 31, 2025, at St. Theodore Catholic Church, with a visitation beginning at 10:00AM. Burial will be in St. Theodore Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Croix Hospice, 2580 Bridge Ave., Albert Lea, or St. Theodore Catholic School, 308 E. Fountain St., Albert Lea.
