Memorial services for Irene Okland Halvorson of Lake Mills, Iowa will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, MN. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery, rural Joice , Iowa. Irene died Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the Lake Mills Care Center. She was 99 years of age.
Irene was born May 15, 1918 in Stanhope, Iowa the daughter of Iver and Sophie (Sunnoe) Okland. She graduated from Rake High School and was salutatorian of her class in 1936. Irene was united in marriage to Marion Halvorson and to this union four children were born: Judy (Tom) Oswald of Lake Mills, IA, Jane (Bob) Easton of Albert Lea, MN, Steve Halvorson of Medford, OR, Susan Halvorson of Eugene, OR, and Kristen (John) Szymanski of Junction City, Oregon, grandsons Clark Oswald, David Easton, Michael Halvorson and Andrew Halvorson; granddaughters Valerie Oswald Dahl and Amy Easton. There are seven great grandchildren, sisters Alyce Underbakke of Forest City, IA, Janet Sader of Babbitt, MN , and several nieces and nephews.
Irene was a devoted mother and grandmother and had a deep rooted faith. She was a wonderful seamstress and could create any design after learning to sew at age five. Marion was a builder and Irene helped design many of the houses that he built. She loved flowers and knew the names and categories of multitudes of flowers. Irene loved to visit with friends and family and excelled at making people feel welcome with good smells coming from the kitchen.
She was preceded in death by her parents Iver and Sophie Okland, husband Marion Halvorson, grandsons Derek Easton and Thomas Halvorson and sisters Eutenna Russ and Ina Mae Smith.
