Harry Holmes

The funeral service for Harry Newton Holmes will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, September 22, 2003, at United Methodist Church, Ellendale, MN. The Reverend Gary Liker will officiate. Burial will be in Geneva Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 PM Sunday at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Ellendale and one hour before the service at the church.
Harry died on Friday, September 19, 2003, at Thorne Crest South Nursing Home, Albert Lea, MN where he had lived for three years. He was 90 years old.
Harry was born in Hampton, Iowa on January 19, 1913, the son of Almon and Bertha (Leopold) Holmes. At the age of three he moved with his family to the Ellendale area where he attended school in Berlin Township District #70.
On June 7, 1939, he was united in marriage with Helen Ferguson in the United Methodist Church, Ellendale, MN. They were active members in the United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, usher and on church council. They farmed the family farm near Beaver Lake.
Harry served on the Ellendale Creamery Board and as president of the Ellendale Band Boosters for many years. He enjoyed camping and traveling but most of all enjoyed time spent with his family and grandchildren.
Harry is survived by his wife, Helen of Ellendale; five children: Barbara (Ryner) Van Wyngeeren of Geneva, MN, Richard (Karen) Holmes of Ellendale, MN, Cynthia (Russell) Nelson of Ellendale, MN, Anthony (Renee') Holmes of Ellendale, MN, Anita (Lester) Casterton of Clarks Grove, MN; nine grandchildren: Marcia (Kevin) Jensen of Red Wing, MN, Mark (Jane) Hemingway of Delano, MN, Lisa (Scott) Rietsema of Glyndon, MN, Scott (Shelly) Holmes of Kasson, MN, Todd Nelson of Faribault, MN, Sara (Brian) Wencl of Owatonna, MN, Colette Holmes of Blooming Prairie, MN, Andrea (Kane) Malo of Northrop, MN, Aaron Casterton of Owatonna, MN; 13 great grandchildren: Rachael and Megan Jensen, Emily, Michael and Katie Hemingway, Laura Sletten, Missy and Dustin Rietsema, Katelynn and Jacklynn Holmes, Zachary Nelson, Trase and Tyler Wencl; two nieces: Naomi (Al) Richards of Surprise, AZ and Bonnie Sloan of Blooming Prairie, MN; six sisters-in-law: Wanda (Jim) Christensen of Ellendale, MN, Anna Foster of Red Wing, MN, Alice Richards of Ellendale, MN, Beulah Crabtree of Ellendale, MN, Mildred (Gerald) Flugum of St. James, MN, Roselyn (Eldon) Peterson of Hayfield, MN; many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; three grandchildren: Amy Holmes in 1977, Kim Sletten in 1985, Matthew Nelson in 1997; one brother, S.A. Holmes; one sister, Clara Sloan.
