Funeral services for Gertrude J. Sorenson will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 8, 2014 at Ascension Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Reverend Mark Boorsma will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 – 7 PM at the Bonnerup Funeral Chapel, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
Gertrude passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Home. She was 99 years old.
Gertrude was born on February 12, 1915 to Andrew and Hilda (Watne) Bergeson, in Lime Springs, IA. The family soon moved to the Freeborn County area, where she continued to be a resident all of her life. Gertrude attended public schools in Freeborn Co.
Gertrude was united in marriage to Alvin Sorenson on September 3, 1936 in Albert Lea. To this union, four children were born. Religion was very important to Gertrude. She was one of the Charter Members of Ascension Lutheran Church, and was actively involved in Church Women United. Before she was a member at Ascension, she was an active member at First Lutheran Church. Gertrude was also a member of War Dads Auxiliary and active in the Sertoma Club. She also volunteered her time at St. John's and the Albert Lea Public Library. Gertrude spent her time raising her family and taking care of the house. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, and most importantly, spending time with her family.
She is preceded by her parents; husband, Alvin; son, David Sorenson; daughter, Helen Mattick; brothers, Harold, Howard, Joe and Art Bergeson; and a sister, Sally Barb.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Judy (Pat) Abrego, of Albert Lea; son, Rick (Andi) Sorenson, of Waconia, MN; a daughter in-law, Anne Sorenson, of Delaware; son in-law, Jerome Mattick, of MN; grandchildren, Chris, Lia, Tim, Lori, Shari, Troy, Samantha, Kelsey, Elly, and Derek; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Olga Johnson, of Albert Lea; sisters in-law, Marion Bergeson and Phyllis Bergeson, both of Albert Lea; as well as many other nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.
