Remembering the life of George "Jimmy" James Kappas
The memorial service for George "Jimmy" James Kappas will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at St. Theodore Catholic Church, Albert Lea, MN. The Reverend James Berning will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service at the church.
Jimmy died on Saturday, October 22, 2005, at the Albert Lea Medical Center, Albert Lea, MN. He was 80 years old.
Jimmy was born in Mitchell, SD on November 14, 1924, the son of Andrew and Rose (Horejsi) Kappas.
Jimmy lived in Mankato and Mason City, IA while growing up and then he moved to Albert Lea in 1932. He attended St. Theodore School, Albert Lea High School and Albert Lea Vo-Tech in the food program
Jimmy worked with his father at the "Hamburger Inn" and then bought the business in 1961 operating it until closing it in 1965. He later worked as manager and cook at the new ?Hamburger Inn? on West William until its closing in 1981. He opened the "Chow House", a Chinese take-out, on S. Broadway and continued working there for several years.
Jimmy enjoyed people and loved kidding with the customers at the restaurants. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and talking about his trips to Las Vegas.
Jimmy is survived by one brother, Donald L. Kappas of Pensacola, FL; one sister, Delores Sherburne of Albert Lea, MN; his nieces and nephews whom he was especially close to: Debbie (Jim) Brossard of Albert Lea, MN, Vicki (Tony) Pestorious of Albert Lea, MN, Becky (Don) Fredrickson of Glenville, MN, Kathy (Loren) Aase of Faribault, MN, Sue (John) Tasker of Geneva, MN, Glenn (Janie) Sherburne of Albert Lea, MN, Andrea (Mike) Jensen of Albert Lea, MN, Bruce (Krissie) Hanson of Minneapolis, MN, Sharon Knezevich of Albert Lea, MN, Delicia (Dave) Rosalez of Fort Dodge, IA, Terry (Mary) Garvey of Boone, IA, JoAnn (Jerry) Anderson of Perry, IA, Patty (LaMar) Larson of Hastings, MN and Dennis (Mary) Kappas of Phoenix, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Lorraine Hanson, Loretta Doud, and Marion Garvey.
In lieu of flowers memorials suggested to St. Theodore Catholic School.
