Memorial services for Gene R. Matthes will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, August 29, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, MN. Reverend Diane Odermann will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM Friday, August 28, 2015 at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea and again one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea. Military honors accorded by the Albert Lea Area Veterans Organizations.
Gene (Geno) Richard Matthes was born January 27th, 1946 to Alfred and Luella (Rupp) Matthes in Albert Lea, MN. He passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family. He was 69 years old.
Gene graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1964. He then enlisted into the United States Air Force, where he served from 1964-1968. He served his country in Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge in 1968 he started working for Scottsman. He then went to Thermo-King Mechanic School in the Twin Cities. After graduating in 1970 he went to work for Dave Syverson Ford as a mechanic. From 1970-1978 he worked as a truck driver for Wilson and Co. From 1978-1982 he worked for Tow and Travel in Albert Lea. Gene nicknamed "Fat Albert" bartended at the American Legion Post 56 from 1970-1980. In 1982 Gene went to work for the State of MN DOT as a highway maintenance worker. He worked there for the last 32 years. That's where he was nicknamed "Grandpa" and "Wrinkled Old Fart".
In September 1970 he was united in marriage with Terry (Harris) Matthes at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. From this marriage he was blessed with two children, Michele and Cassie. In December 2001 he was united in marriage with Mary (Monson) Matthes where he gained three bonus children, Geri, Chad, and Jeff 'Buck' Monson.
Gene loved hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved spending time on Tom Lake in Hovland, MN hunting and fishing with his friends.
Gene is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters: Michele (Mike) Vonhagen of Arizona, Cassie (Phil Goodmanson) of Albert Lea; bonus daughter: Geri Studier of Albert Lea; bonus son: Jeff 'Buck' Monson of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Taylor Shaunce of Lakefield, MN, Calleigh Vonhagen of Arizona, Kennady Goodmanson of Albert Lea, Brittny Studier (Adam Jensen) of Minneapolis; Mackenzie, Paige and Levi Monson of Albert Lea; Alex and Olivia Goodmanson of Albert Lea. He will always have a special place in his heart for Steve Shaunce of Lakefield, MN and Matt Grobe of Austin, MN.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Luella; brother, Larry; and bonus son, Chad Monson.
