Funeral services for Floyd R. Hinkley will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea Chapel. The Chaplain Julie Schaffer will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at a later date at the Freeborn Cemetery, Freeborn, MN.
Floyd died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Thorne-Crest Retirement Center. He was 99 years old.
Floyd R. Hinkley was born on July 30, 1914 to George W. and Julia (Jacobson) Hinkley in Freeborn, MN. Floyd was a lifelong resident of Freeborn, which is where he attended and graduated high school. After his schooling, Floyd became a founding partner of Hinkley Chevrolet. He worked there for many years. Prior to his retirement, Floyd worked for Freeborn County Human Service for five years.
Floyd was a lifetime member of the Freeborn Congregational United Church of Christ. Floyd was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Freeborn Fire Department, and an avid member of the Rod and Gun Club.
Floyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, music and was very proud of his vegetable garden, where he would spend most of his summers. Floyd had a special love for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren that could not be matched. His special joy came from Sunday get-togethers with his family, where he would proudly serve the vegetables he grew from seedlings.
Floyd is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; sister, Iva Proehl; brothers, Irving, Raymond, and Vernon; as well as one grandson and one great-great grandson.
Those left to cherish Floyd's memory are his children, JoAnn (Allan) Stensrud, of Freeborn, Maxine (Dan) Long, of Austin; grandchildren, Cari (Kevin) Stenzel, of Freeborn, Tom (Jennifer) Stensrud, of Albert Lea, Kelly (Terry) Christen, of Warrens, WI, Jodi (Mark) Eich, of Austin, and Jason (Shelly) Long, of Isle, MN; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Fjone, of Albert Lea and Gladys (W.G.) Miskoff, of Hutchinson, MN; as well as a sister in-law, Barbara Geesman, of Albert Lea.
