The memorial service for Eugene (Gene) William Evans of Albert Lea, Minnesota will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Albert Lea. The Reverend John Bromeland will officiate.. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea and one hour before the service at the church. Gene passed away on July 31, 2009 at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, surrounded by his family, from complications of ALS and pneumonia. Gene was born January 14, 1935, in Albert Lea to William (Bill) H. and Juanita (Hutchinson) Evans. He was baptized and confirmed at First Methodist Church of Albert Lea and remained an active member there his whole life. He graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1953, and Riverland Technical College in 1974. He served in the U. S. Army from April, 1955 to October, 1957, when he medically retired. After his retirement from the Army, he attended the Hines Blind Rehab Center. He was united in marriage to Joanne Bauers on August 24, 1968, at First Lutheran Church. He was employed by Brua's Garage, Alvin Carlson Masonry, Southtown Appliance and Evans Motors until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Blinded Veterans Association (B.V.A.), Eagles, Moose Lodge, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), Hines Blind Rehab Center Alumni, and MN Chapter of ALS association. He enjoyed watching many sports events, especially NASCAR races, the Vikings, and the Twins. He also enjoyed traveling all over the United States and beyond with his wife as often as they could. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Gene is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joanne of Albert Lea, MN, his daughter Sara Evans of Oakdale, MN, son Michael (LeeAndra) Evans and granddaughter Ruby Jean of Rochester, MN. Sister Gwen (Andy) Tatarek of Albert Lea, MN, sister-in-law Mary Ann Evans of Forest City, IA, sister-in-law Dorothy Bauers of Albert Lea, MN, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and many, many friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Juanita Evans, brother Ken Evans, brother Keith Evans in infancy, and brother-in-law Fred Bauers.
