Memorial services for Edward William Shannon of Albert Lea, MN will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, December 16, 2016 at St Theodore Catholic Church in Albert Lea. Father Russell Sepaniak will officiate. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in St Theodore Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Area Veterans Groups.
Ed died Monday, December 12, 2016 at St Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. He was 89 years of age.
Ed was born July 3, 1927 in Baker, Oregon, the son of Charles and Ruth (Emerson) Shannon. He was very proud of the fact that his grandparents traveled one of the last wagen trains across the Oregon trail. He graduated from Baker High School in Oregon and Mankato State College in Mankato, MN. Ed served his country in the Korean Conflict in the US Army and served in the Army Reserves at Ft McCoy, WI. On April 7, 1951 he was united in marriage to Elaine Verdick in Jackson, MN. Ed taught school in Jordan and Madelia, MN, worked for Land-O-Lakes and Olsen Manufacturing, before taking a job at the Albert Lea Tribune where he worked for over 27 years.
Ed was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. He had a great love for History and spent many hours researching at the Freeborn County Historical Museum. Ed loved living in Albert Lea and lived in the same house all these years.
He is survived by his children; Lorie Davis of Zumbrota, MN, Linda (Charles) Trost of Glenville, MN, Pete (Deanna Cook) Shannon of Milwaukee, WI, Carol Shannon of Vadnais Heights, MN. Grandchildren are Aaron Davis, Kelli Trost, Krista Trost, Kari (Josh) Luehmann, Megan (Brandon) Meister and Alex Cook Shannon. There are two great grandchildren; Blake and Tate Luehmann, brothers in law Leo (Barb) Verdick of Los Angeles, CA, Father Jerome Verdick of Jackson, MN, sister in law Mary Kelly of Omaha, NE, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine in 2013 and brother Lewis (Alene) Shannon.
