Memorial services for David Robert Callahan will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 22 at Bonnerup Funeral Home, Albert Lea . Military honors will be accorded by Albert Lea Veteran's Organizations. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. James Cemetery, Twin Lakes, MN.
David was born February 11, 1947 at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea. He died on April 11, 2017 at New Richland Care Center at the age of 70. His parents were Robert Callahan and Hazel (Andersen) Doyle. David grew up on a farm in rural Albert Lea. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Theodore Catholic Church and attended schools in Albert Lea. He enlisted in the U.S.Navy and served from 1964 to 1967. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bennington, stationed off the coast of Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the service he settled in Hawthorne, CA.
There, he met and married JoAnne Franklin in 1969. After David and JoAnne were married David joined the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They had four children, Shawna, Scott, Erin and Heather. In 1980 David, JoAnne and their children were sealed for time and all eternity in the Temple in Los Angeles, CA.
David worked for a number of years in the oil fields in Southern California and later in maintenance at a local college. He attended art school and enjoyed painting portraits and scenery. He loved horses and was a vintage car enthusiast. After he retired, he returned to Albert Lea to live until suffering several strokes in 2016. He lived the past several months in the New Richland Care Center, New Richland, MN.
David is survived by his children: daughter Shawna Leah Callahan; son Scott (Jennifer) Callahan, daughter Erin Callahan Estrada; all of Hawthorne, CA; and daughter Heather (John) Whitney of Lomita, CA. He has 14 grandchildren—Kaitlyn, Shane, Laeci and Natalie Callahan and Dylan, Alexis, Camryn, Maddison, Meadow, and Jagger Estrada all of Hawthorne, CA; and Ethan, Jackson, Logan, and Savannah Whitney of Lomita, CA. Other survivors include his sister Karen Callahan and brothers Matt (Tammy Claussen) and Mark "Coke" Callahan of Albert Lea; former wife JoAnne Koval; aunts Doris Callahan and Betty Callahan of Albert Lea and Mary M. O'Marro, Rochester, MN; and Kathleen Claassen, Kasson, MN; and numerous cousins.
David was preceded in death by his parents and grandchild Cole Callahan in infancy and stepdad Tom Doyle.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent to the Freeborn County Historical Museum's Building Fund or donor's choice.
